International Drive Orlando
Where can you find fun attractions for the whole family, restaurants, fast food, water parks, hotels, and shopping all on one strip? You can find all of that and more on International Drive in Orlando, Florida. This is a great family-friendly 11 1/2 mile major highway and is the core of the tourist attractions in Orlando.
The first part of International Drive was laid out in the 60's to accommodate a hotel built by Mr. Finley Hamilton. He built his hotel south of the main part of Orlando. He was looking toward the future, expecting Walt Disney World to draw tourists to that area. Hamilton was the one who initially called it International Drive because it sounded fancy. International Drive begins at Pointe Plaza Drive and extends to the Beachline Expressway. Mr. Hamilton's hotel, which was considered to be too far out of the city, has been very successful.
Along that 11 1/2 mile route you will find the Orange County Convention Center complex as well as major hotel chains. You will also find many museums, restaurants, bars, and malls along this strip. Some of the area's major attractions will be found on International Drive including Sea World Orlando, Wet 'n Wild Orlando and Universal Orlando is also located in this area.
There are several bus routes in this area and the I-Ride trolley system helps move tourists and convention goers. You can to all areas of the city easily, including Orlando National Airport and downtown Orlando.
Several planned communities and extended stay apartments are being planned for this area. Rosen College of Hospitality Management, an off-campus extension of the University of Central Florida is also located on this busy highway.
If you are hungry you can choose from a wide variety of fast food restaurants, family-style restaurants, food courts or fine dining. All of them cater to Orlando's booming tourist business.
International Drive is truly a diverse location. You can find water parks, a Hard Rock Cafe, theme parks, and The Holy Land Experience. The Holy Land Experience is a Christian based theme park. You can shop at the Prime Outlet Mall, or swim with the dolphins at a pristine beach with lush tropical plants. Your one destination for all family fun is along International Drive in Orlando, Florida.
